Our friends over at LAstereo.TV recently conducted an interview with DMV hip hop group Diamond District (Oddisee, XO, YU). Notice in the video that DD is performing an instore at the late great hip hop record store, FatBeatsLA. Rest In Peace. Here the group discusses their name, the DC hip hop scene, & experiences out in Sudan amidst footage from their FatBeatsLA show. Very in-depth interview, a must watch. Being that BackToPluto.com is an LA x DMV based blog, we definitely had to share this with y’all.
So as I said in the previous post, I was at my good friend DJ Akasan‘s going away party this past May. It was one of the most unique parties I’ve been to. It really captured and reflected Akasan’s personality, and was a really great way to send him off. I got a chance to interview him during the party. In this interview Akasan talks about his Japanese Tour Agency: Intermixi, why he started djaying, the current state of turntablist culture and his plans for the future. Be on the lookout for Akasan’s debut mixtape being released in Japan & the internet soon. He won’t be back in Los Angeles for a good 3 years so he’ll be updating his travels via Intermixi’s YouTube Channel. Hit up Akasan at Intermixi.com for your next trip to Japan!
The homie DJ Akasan threw a going away party this past May as he was about to depart for a 3 year stay in Tokyo, Japan. It was at an art gallery/club/cosplay cafe in Los Angeles known as Royal T, and the homie Sonny_B decided to have a release party for his new music video (watch it! fine dimes! haha) for his current single “BounceJerk” go down in conjunction with Akasan’s party. I got a chance to chop it up with him at the event. Dude is probably one of the more unique emcees I have encountered. I don’t know any other artist (in LA at least) that can wield two languages (one that isn’t native to them) proficiently while rapping. In this interview he sheds light on how his style came about and the impact of Japanese hip hop.
Sonny was recently featured on The Primary Colors compilation mixtape hosted by Asian music blog CrayonBeats. In this interview he spit his verse off the track featured in the tape titled “YES ~Just Make It~” ft. Japanese emcee Chikatetsu.
I ran into LA emcee duo YouGoons (Tirso Cruz & Petey Pype) while I was doing some PR work/partying at DJ Akasan‘s Super Happy Tokyo Love event so I decided to interview them. We discuss how the group came about, how they got their names, their newest single “Not A Mixtape” featured on KhanArtist‘s The Asiatic Black Ranger mixtape & much more. Petey also takes a shot at youtube celeb Kev Jumba & spits a fresh out the iphone verse. Stay tuned for more interviews from this event.
